For some reason, looking at Seto here, I'm getting flashbacks to Happy Boys.

The older D☆DATE members talk about their current and soon-coming projects.

[livejournal.com profile] puricoffee was so kind as to order and send the GLORY FIVE DVD to me. Amazingly, it came Thursday, just a little over 24 hours from when she told me she sent it! I know it was EMS, but that's still gotta be some kind of record!

I've watched it on my DVD player (I have a region-free player), and haven't had time to make gifs or anything. When I do, I can give a better a report. I'm thinking having a viewing session next weekend, if anyone is interested, so we can watch together.

Impressions:

The DVD and its case and booklet not as high quality as the first time around. I don't know if that's a function of being with Avex or using 7net as the distributor. It's sort of strange, because the concert itself, to judge from the recording, was more lavishly produced than their previous ones. That aside, it's still a please to watch and the photobooklet is nice to look through.

Igarashi: IG was the real focus of this DVD. It's a very loving tribute and parting. The camera didn't miss any opportunities to focus on him, and this is completely OK. We will never again get to see him perform, or see him at all, probably, unless we can make it to his restaurant, Shabu 8. He had warm and supportive words for each member. and you can get a real sense of his influence within the group. And, as always, he showed a comfort and familiarity with the audience, an ability to really work the crowd, that no one else has. He really will be missed.

Yanagishita: Tomo has a lot of energy! He fills his part of the stage with improvised movement. Fortunately, he's toned down the musical improvisation when singing and did a lot better functioning as part of the group than he did right after he first joined. He is definitely quite the clown, which is good since someone needs to fill that space now that Shunji has left. He and Koji sang Zutto together, which worked really well as a duet.

Araki: He's gorgeous, in a very intentional way, and more so on this DVD than before. And he has a lot more vocal control, which was a pleasure to hear. I'll never understand how someone who is obviously as strong as Arayan is has such an air of delicacy. I guess this is why he works well when singing with Koji, since the Seto-side is opposite: someone who appears so delicate but has an air of strength. It's almost as if there had been a childhood Freaky Friday incident. (I was flashing back to his previous duet with Koji. I guess I must have liked it or something!)

Arata: Horii continues to be the sweetest babby ever! You'd think after his 3rd concert tour that he wouldn't reduce to tears. But you'd be wrong! When Shunji started telling them each his goodbyes and his thoughts, Horii just came apart. He even nearly got Koji crying. Once again, the crowd was urging him on, shouting their support. Awwww. Horii has come so far, and made such amazing improvement in every way. He can actually sing fairly well now, and displays a remarkable degree of confidence. Sweet babby, I'm so proud of you!

Seto: He's still leading off and closing most of the songs, which makes me happy. He has always had a strong voice, and if anything, it had become even stronger by the time of the Glory Five concert. He's beautiful any time, but when he's singing, he positively glows. If he has had any weakness as a member of D☆DATE, it's his bashfulness. Here, he finally seemed to have achieved ease in interacting with the crowd. I'm going to attribute this to Shunji's example.

Overall, GLORY FIVE is very much a farewell tribute to Shunji. The editing, the focus, the song sets themselves all highlighted him. I can't imagine that any D☆DATE fans are going to be bothered by that. It was so refreshing to see an entertainer leaving the business obviously being sent off with all the well-wishes his comrades and his company could muster. But I still can't help wishing that, sometime, somehow, they'll reunite.

This should be interesting. CD Japan already has the CD versions available for pre-order, and I imagine HMV and Amazon.jp will have them also. Oh, and Yes Asia. Because we are dealing with ikemen, there are 6 different versions. I am really looking forward to hearing the results of the collaboration.

Yesterday's ustream of D☆DATE featured our boys being evaluated by some kind of psychologist/fortune teller/counselor. Based on my incredibly weak knowledge of Japanese, I was able to surmise the following:
  • Seto is like an ojisan in the group. Huh? Surely I misheard that.
  • Setomo is a thing. But not in a kinky way. They are like brothers.
  • Tomo and Arata are like rivals.
  • Tomo and IG have a strictly business relationship.
  • Leader is protective of Tomo.
After their individual and group dynamic was analyzed, they did a photoshoot to illustrate how each of the others relates with Tomo.

Anyone who could understand more, please fill me in and correct me!

I bought both versions of 淋しいマグネット (Samishii Magunetto), and they came just 2 days after the release date. I watched Reds right away, rereading "Our Bad Magnet" by Douglas Maxwell as I went. Yesterday, I finally had time to watch the Blues performance and watch the Reds (this time with companionship, thanks to Yami) all the way through. There aren't a lot of reviews in English, so if you are trying to decide if you also want to buy (you do, you do!), maybe I can help.

Cast and Review )
Not surprisingly, I prefer the Reds version. Seto is my favorite young Japanese actor for a reason, and he amply demonstrates it with his performance in Samishii Magunetto. This is also the last stage performance by Endo as a D-BOY, and what a great performance it was! In his face, it is easy to see Gonzo's collapse of hope and anger at his shattered delusions. But if you like the Blues cast, or think you'd be more interested in the way they played the characters, you will certainly be satisfied with that choice. I know I will continue to watch both of them.

Did you know:
Watching without understanding Japanese or having read the play? Here are some cues. )

I added more translation submissions (thanks, ichigo!) and 3 more sets of questions and answers. I didn't have time to work out the correct hiragana for these ones, so the fun of seeing if my hiragana will actually bring up the right kanji will have to wait.

2. Buy any version of the single! Make it extra sweet by buying through CD Japan during their fund raiser this month.
3. Participate in my Japan Relief campaign by showing me your proof of purchase. (Yes, I am going to keep nagging my entire fl about this until I reach my goal. So just cave and buy the CD already!)

I looked at a Japanese D-Boys fan blog that posted up her latest bromide acquisitions. Seto appears to be reverse aging. Amazing. And Arayan is pretty, so pretty.
